Strengths or shadows? Embracing the shadow side

Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.
A common debate in the field of human change is whether it is more effective to focus on discovering and building on people’s strengths, or to explore what is preventing them from fulfilling their potential—their shadows.
  • The Humanistic and Positive Psychology schools focus more on strengths, the idea that humans have incredible potential that, if recognised and nurtured, leads to human flourishing.
  • Depth Psychology schools focus more on shadows, the idea that by uncovering and coming to terms with the more challenging aspects of our personalities we are less held back by them.
Awareness – the common thread
The common thread to the exploration of our strengths and shadows is the aspect of awareness. According to Sir John Whitmore, a pioneer in the field of executive coaching, awareness empowers us.
I am able to control only that which I am aware of. That which I am unaware of controls me. Awareness empowers me.
